羊毛を使った繊細な作品が魅力

ニュージーランドといって一般の人がすぐに思い浮かべるのが、緑豊かな牧草地でたくさんの羊たちが草を食むのどかな田園風景。北島中央部のタウポに暮らすレアン・クラリーはそんな“羊の国”らしいウールアーティスト。羊毛を巧みに使い、繊細で美しい風景画を描く芸術家です。

シープファーマーの夫と結婚し、羊に囲まれた暮らしをおくるようになったレアンがウールで絵を描き始めたのは1985年のこと。もともと芸術に興味を持ち、油絵を習っていた彼女は、「ウールを使って何かできることはないだろうか」と考え、この世界でも稀なユニークなアートスタイルを確立しました。

ひとくちにウールといっても、その色は白だけではありません。微妙な色の違うウールを組み合わせて作り上げた彼女の作品は、まるでセピアカラーの写真のよう。現在は、作品にあわせて羊毛のほか、モヘアやポッサムの毛もミックスしているそうです。

ストーリーを思い浮かべながら作品づくりに打ち込む

ブッシュ、丘、山々、滝、川、湖といったニュージーランドのランドスケープを描き続けるレアン。彼女の作品は次第に多くの人々に知られるようになり、国内のさまざまなアートギャラリーで企画展が開かれたり、イギリスのテレビ番組に紹介されたりもしました。

一つひとつが味わい深く特別な彼女の作品は、オンラインショップで購入できますが、毎週土曜日に開催されているタウポのマーケット「アート・イン・ザ・パーク」にも出店しているので、足を運ぶのもおすすめ。レアン本人からウールアートにまつわるさまざまな話を聞きながら好きな作品を選ぶといいでしょう。

「絵筆の代わりにウールを使うのは簡単なことではないし、時には思い通りにならず、フラストレーションもたまるんですよ（笑）。でも心を落ち着けてその作品の世界が持つストーリーを頭の中に思い浮かべながら、作業しているのは幸せな時間。ニュージーランドにいらしたら、ぜひ旅の思い出に私の作品を連れて帰ってください」

そう微笑むレアン。彼女の穏やかで優しい人柄は、それぞれの作品からも感じられます。

タウポ在住。ウールファーマーの夫と結婚したことをきっかけに、1985年からウールを使ったアート制作に取り組む。ニュージーランド各地のアートギャラリーで作品が紹介されたほか、イギリスのテレビ番組からも取材を受けた。毎週土曜日、タウポのArt in the Parkに出店中。
